Ask Price

Also known as: Offer Price

The lowest price a seller is currently willing to accept for an asset.

Plain-English Meaning

The ask price is the price you must pay when you want to buy. If you want to enter a long position immediately, the broker or exchange will charge you the ask price.

Why It Matters

The ask price is always slightly higher than the bid price. This means when you buy an asset, you are paying a slight premium over the baseline market rate. This premium forms the spread.

Simple Example

If a crypto exchange quotes Bitcoin at 60,000 / 60,050, the second number (60,050) is the Ask price. You must pay 60,050 to buy the Bitcoin right this second.

This educational example uses selected assumptions for reference calculation purposes. Real conditions may vary by broker, exchange, or instrument.

Beginner Mistake

Placing a protective Stop Loss on a short trade exactly at a technical chart level, forgetting that the trade closes at the higher Ask price. The Ask price might hit your stop even if the visual chart line doesn't quite reach it.
